AI (Artificial Intelligence)

 —
"I feel so proud with the result (new chapter). At first it was hard, to do it by myself, no AI allowed - but then it became so clear to me. Is it good, really? I was just writing my very own words, not trying to be academic or using big words. You know, everybody uses AI, and they (the teachers) also stimulate us to use it. But to rediscover I can do it myself, I can say what I want to and mean to say about this topic, that actually feels really good".

There is so much Artificial Intelligence (AI) can do for you. But we can do more. Allow us to:

1. Ensure you are not accused of plagiarism when you submit your thesis

2. Bring out your true ability as a unique human, and make go beyond what you can do with AI, and regain confidence in your own ability.

3. Equip you with what AI can do for your thesis output. Use it, don’t be used by it. Do the right work, faster and smarter.

We work closely with university professors and are well-versed with the most recent insights on how to use AI as well as how NOT to use it, for your thesis.

The way forward - what your programme will look like with us
At StudioBlended we believe that we must shift our focus away from the end product and look at the process afresh.

We must be more daring in how we design our thesis programme educationally and find ways to phase in AI. What we need is to dialogue with our students ("What is it that you're trying to do here? Tell me more about it"). From there  we develop the process which creates the output, the end product, your thesis.

There is nothing wrong with consulting AI to gain suggestions on how to improve a text. But your teachers’ experience can be a valuable guide.

When you use AI, you often lose your authentic own line of argument, in other words: your voice. We are actually more interested in AI apps that can record you explaining your argument e orally, and translate that into text!

When you come to us with your thesis, The first thing we do is to challenge you to produce a text for a chapter without using AI. We give you a strategy to write a robust text for yourself. We then look at the rubric together to understand it fully and then grade and evaluate your work.

You wouldn't believe the impact this approach has.

Do you recogize this?

Here are some of our observations on students like you, who use AI regularly.

Amplifying a lack of confidence
Increasingly, at StudioBlended we are witnessing  how insecure young people like yourself are becoming about their writing. About their own voice.

Some students don't dare to write a single sentence without using Chat GPT - not even in an email to us.

This is NOT how we want to deliver our students to the world and their working lives, without the self-confidence to say what they mean.

Failing to develop writing skills and critical thinking
With the arrival of ChatGPT, students are increasingly failing to develop the writing skills needed for life and the workplace. More worrying is the lack of development of critical thinking skills. Of course, writing and critical thinking are integrally linked.

Allowing your generation to enter adulthood without the skills needed to make good decisions about their future and the future of society, will have a profound impact on the world.

Uncertainty about assessment
We also see students becoming incredibly insecure, when it comes to the evaluation of their own work.

Some students put the rubrics of their institute into ChatGPT and ask AI to grade them and give them feedback and direction.

More often than not, students are more lost after using AI.

This is really sad, because together we can start to make true sense out of the grading criteria and rubrics of your thesis, so that you can make them work foryou.

Lack of orientation as an exploration of the knowledge domain misses
When you use AI, you often lack orientation, meaning, you do not actually know the right question to ask. This only develops after you have explored a knowledge domain.

Without that orientation, a prompt is no more than a wild guess. There are simply too many options to ask AI questions in a focused way.

ChatGPT can only help you think once you know where you are in the knowledge domain.

Unfit for your future of work and your life
Using ChatGPT all the time is a sure pathway to knowing little to nothing about your subject.

‘Massive numbers of students are going to emerge from university with degrees, and into the workforce, who are essentially illiterate. Both in the literal sense and in the sense of being historically illiterate and having no knowledge of their own culture, much less anyone else’s…’ said Troy Jollimore, a poet, philosopher, and Cal State Chico ethics professor.

Surely that’s not what you want for your life after spending so much time and money on a degree?

How you see our pedagogical view of AI back in the context of our advice and mentorship
Using AI is a quick escape from the task of writing and supposedly saves you time. Yet, comfort is the killer. Struggle is the sculptor. What if avoiding adversity is what keeps you from growing wings? Just like the butterfly needs to struggle through the cocoon to strengthen its wings, maybe you don’t need more comfort, but more persistence (see the brilliant videoclip by the athlete Cara Morey).

We will not remove all the obstacles for you. Or fix your problems for you. Rather, we will offer a way through. How we frame stress determines whether it breaks us or builds us. A growth mindset turns setbacks into springboards.
