ICONIC (Guest) LECTURE - SENIOR TEACHER TRAINING

“When Tikvah approached me for a collaboration with the Studio (Blended) I felt this could be something good for advancing in my educational endeavors, and that the time was right to reflect further after more than two decades involved in education. Tikvah is always so positive, encouraging and open to share her expertise for the betterment of educational professionals. Her innovative approach and passion for her work is fantastic to infuse new energy into my own work, which I consider very important. So I’d love to associate with her and co-create something; like the guest interview we did for the Audio Podcast on matters of time in a lecture”.

If you - as a course coordinator or senior lecturer - deliver a certain key (guest) lecture on your most essential academic and professional content, often, over the course of a decade, and even globally, in other words: if you have an iconic lecture on the shelf, wouldn’t it be so revitalising and interesting to know how you can amplify the impact of this lecture, and continue to rejuvenate it?

Do you even ever get the opportunity for growth as a senior teacher? Who gives you capacity development? Who truly sees your performance?

StudioBlended offers highly bespoke teacher training capacity development to senior lecturers.

Counterintuitively perhaps, we - in principle - do not focus on didactics (how you teach) [see our manifesto]. Our teacher training focuses purely on your education and pedagogics - by design.

Perhaps it dissapoints you initially, if you are looking for concrete suggestions for how didactics and instruction should be done. We always believed that educations is a thoroughly practical art (following also Biesta 2022, and Bulterman 2024). The point of lecture observation to us is, not to tell you as a teacher what you should do, but to provide you with resources that may inform your educational artistry (see also Stenhouse 1988 and Eisner 2001).

There are already plenty of teacher training courses such as the Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs (BKO) out there, that focus on didactics. We believe there are so many fresh insights you can discover in the design for a lecture to better amplify the impact of it. We come alongside you, and partner with you, to give you independent senior advise on your lecture design. And then, from there, we believe you should have all the freedom of craftmanship and art to teach in a way that best fits your being.

What we do focus on are for example:
- matters of time (during delivery of the lecture, and during preparation/development as well as after-care)
- your own human resilience (simplicity/enjoyment)
- modular design of your iconic lecture to become more versitile with a spectrum of audiences
- the resilience of your content, and making its big ideas decade proof
- pedagogics
- effective design for the brain
- dialogue in your education / dialogic education
- Your personal strenghts.
- Being smart with your quality, time and cost investment in development of your material
and more.

Key projects

We had another beautiful opportunity to collaborate on Friday April 4, when dr. Alonso Ayala - senior expert in housing and Human Settlement Planning, gave his iconic lecture on ‘The 5 A’s principles for Adequate housing’ to undergraduate students in architecture at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of TU/D.

Alonso came as a visiting lecturer on behalf of the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) as part of an exchange agreement with the Technical University of Delft (TU/Delft), and was invited by dr. Nelson Mota, course coordinator.

The 5 A’s principles of Adequate housing model, has been authored by dr. Alonso Ayala, dr. Maartje van Eerd, and Ellen Geurts.

Tikvah Breimer (MSc MAEd MSc) came to observe Alonso and set-up a reflection dialogue over lunch afterwards, consolidated in a briefing as per the set up of our advise. The agreement was that Tikvah would pay attention especially to the use of time and on how Alonso can gain more human resilience - simplicity/enjoyment. Why ‘time’? Because as a visiting senior lecturer, you often get a given timeslot (does it feel ‘rigid’?) within which you get to deliver your content.

As part of a broader advisory assignment, Tikvah Breimer (MSc MAEd MSc) sat in the lecture of a spectrum of researchers who were teaching in the Sustainable Urban Development (SUD) course at the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR).

The idea was to evaluate the imact of the advise given to the course coordinator. Each lecturer had received - upon advise of Tikvah Breimer - clear guidance on the learning objective of their lecture. Would they be able to excecute this? Did the lectures put together indeed contribute to the overall curriculum and constructive alignment of the course - as designed for in the advisory trajectory? Every lecturer observation was followed up with a 1 on 1 talk in a relaxed setting, and the learnings gathered were reported in a briefing for the course coordinator and director of IHS. Also, a podcast guest lecture was recorded with one of the lecturers, Pamela Duran Diaz.

Did you know Tikvah Breimer (MSc MAEd MSc) was already training teachers when she started her first teaching job in a secondary school? Indeed secondary schools are a breedings place for experimentation and innovation, and robust teacher training in didactics and pedagogy.
